Why this matchup matters

Stripe is the better-known company. Razorpay is the better-positioned one — in India. The matchup matters because India is the single largest digital payments market by transaction volume (UPI alone does ~14B transactions/month) and the regulatory rails (UPI, RBI's PA/PG framework, NPCI) reward local incumbents.

Razorpay didn't beat Stripe on technology — Stripe's stack is arguably superior. It beat Stripe on regulatory access, UPI-native plumbing, and a sales motion built around Indian SMBs that don't read English-first documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stripe available in India?

Stripe operates in India in invite-only beta and cannot freely onboard Indian merchants. Stripe applied for an RBI Payment Aggregator license but as of 2024 it has not received in-principle or final approval — a constraint Razorpay does not face.

Why is Razorpay so dominant in India?

Three reasons: (1) RBI in-principle PA license, (2) deep UPI integration when UPI grew to 80%+ of digital transaction volume, and (3) a product suite (RazorpayX banking, Capital lending, Payroll) that locks SMBs into the platform beyond payments.

Who is bigger — Stripe or Razorpay?

Globally, Stripe is roughly 12x larger by valuation and 7x larger by TPV. In India, Razorpay processes a multiple of Stripe's Indian volume. Comparing them is really a global vs regional comparison.

What is Razorpay's biggest threat?

PhonePe, Paytm Payment Gateway, and Cashfree on the merchant side; PayU on the international side; and the perpetual risk of an RBI rule change (it lost its PA/PG license to onboard new merchants for ~9 months in 2023–24 before being restored).
